What first prompted you to volunteer with ARRT?

Someone at the ARRT sent me an invitation to volunteer as a consultant shortly after I completed a certification exam. I had not considered it prior to seeing the invitation.

When did you start volunteering with ARRT?

Fall 2022

What type of volunteering have you done with ARRT?

I am an Item Writer and Reviewer for the Bone Densitometry and Bone Densitometry Equipment Operator exams. I've been on the Bone Densitometry Exam committee for about 6 months.

What do you enjoy the most about being a volunteer with ARRT?

Item writing forces me to think comprehensively about what we do at work and why we do things a certain way. It's interesting to then formulate an item that could be used on a future certification exam. I find it rewarding to write things that are fair for entry-level candidates while keeping in mind that English is not the first language for everyone. Volunteering gives me an opportunity to help develop the skills of other technologists and to support growth in the profession.

If you could give advice to someone who is interested in volunteering with ARRT, what would that be?

It's easy to say and do the same things everyday but challenging to determine how and why we do them. The ARRT always needs new items for exams to keep them fresh, relevant, and fair. It's a small commitment of a few hours every week with a huge return of satisfaction that we've contributed on a higher level to our profession.

What do you like to do when you are not working or volunteering with ARRT?

I love traveling, hiking, and watching WNBA games with my family. I'm always bird watching and enjoy working in our perennial gardens filled with plants native to the Pacific Northwest. We are steadily winning the battle of the weeds!

The Bone Densitometry Exam Development Coordinator, Jennifer Edwards, says: "Stephanie was so diligent and committed to item writing, I thought she'd be a great Exam committee member. I wasn't wrong. Her thoughtful contributions and exquisite attention to detail enhance committee discussions and have led to more robust exams. Since she began volunteering one and a half years ago, Stephanie has accrued an impressive 180 hours. Thank you for your dedication to the profession, Stephanie!!!"
