Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
QUALIFICATIONS
Q: Why is a Conflict-of-Interest of Interest Disclosure Statement REQUIRED in order to volunteer?
All volunteer applicants are reviewed by the ARRT Board of Trustees before being assigned to a discipline committee. Completing a Conflict-of-Interest Disclosure Statement helps the Board ensure that any industry-related activities do not interfere with the integrity of the committee’s work or present potential conflicts.
Q: Do I need ARRT credentials to volunteer with ARRT?
Yes, you will need credentials in the discipline for which you'd like to volunteer. If you are a physician or physicist, you need to be recommended by ACR or AAPM.
Q: Can I volunteer if I am new to the profession?
Yes, volunteers from all disciplines and with all levels of experience can make an important contribution. ARRT strives to strike a balance in selecting volunteers from various geographic regions, practice settings, levels of experience, and types of positions (e.g., staff technologist, imaging assistant, educator, administrator).
Q: Can educators volunteer on ARRT committees?
Yes, but only on certain committees. See our Information for Educators page.
Q: Are committee meetings in-person or virtual?
Some are in-person and some are virtual! It depends on the meeting type, meeting frequency, and the availability of the committee. Learn more about in-person and virtual meetings.
VOLUNTEER PROCESS
Q: I'd like to volunteer - what do I do first?
To get started, create an account on the Volunteer Portal. You must complete a Conflict-of-Interest Disclosure Statement to be considered for future opportunities.
Q: What happens after I complete my volunteer registration?
After ARRT reviews your registration information, you'll be added to our volunteer database.
The next step depends on the information you provide on your registration. Whether you indicate an interest in writing items or joining an exam, special project, or practice analysis committee, we’ll add your name and information to our waiting list. We’ll contact you if a position opens that matches your discipline, experience, geographic location, and type of facility.
Q: How are volunteer assignments made?
If you are matched to an available committee opportunity, we will send your name to the ARRT Board of Trustees for their approval. Once you have been approved, we will contact you via email to invite you to accept the volunteer committee assignment. It is extremely important to accept or decline the invitation.
Q: Does it cost anything to volunteer?
We reimburse consultants for expenses incurred as part of their meeting participation. For virtual meetings we reimburse lunch expenses, and any expenses related to shipping of the ARRT laptops used during the meeting. Also, expenses for in-person meetings include food, travel, and accommodation should you be required to participate on a committee at ARRT headquarters.
ARRT VOLUNTEER HONORARIUM
Q: Are volunteers paid for their time?
No, volunteers are not paid for their time but will receive a modest honorarium.
Q: How much is the ARRT Volunteer Honorarium?
Once a volunteer has been assigned to a committee, they will receive $250 per each FULL day of committee meeting attendance. Most committees meet for two full days for each meeting.
Q: Is the ARRT Volunteer Honorarium taxable?
Yes. Once you have reached honorarium or item writing payments of $600, ARRT will send (by mail) a completed 1099 form. It is at the discretion of the volunteer to report this information on their income tax forms.
Q: Can I waive the ARRT Volunteer Honorarium?
Yes. The second page of the committee contract has a place to waive the honorarium.
COMMUNICATION
Q: I haven't received any communication from the Volunteer Portal. Do I need to do anything different?
You should receive an initial email stating that your information has been added to our database. If you did NOT receive that email, please check your SPAM folder. If you opted-out of communications from us, you won't receive any communication from ARRT. If you need assistance, please email us at volunteers@arrt.org.
Q: Is there another place I can find communications other than my personal email?
YES! Once you have created your account, you will notice that you have an Inbox on the Volunteer Portal. All communications that have been emailed from the Volunteer Portal can be found here unless you have deleted them.
Q: Can I send an email from my Volunteer Portal?
No. Unfortunately communication within the portal is one way - from us to you. If you need to get in touch with us, we can always be reached at volunteers@arrt.org. Once you have been assigned to a committee, the Assessment Development Coordinator's contact information will also be available to you.
Q: Can I "unsubscribe" from emails?
Yes, you can, however, if you unsubscribe from our emails, we won't be able to communicate with you about committee appointments and upcoming committee meetings. It won't be very often that you will receive emails unrelated to your volunteer assignment. Therefore, if you unsubscribe, we will assume you no longer wish to volunteer, and we will deactivate your account.
OPPORTUNITIES
Q: What are the volunteer areas of greatest need?
All of our volunteer opportunities are important. Some needs are ongoing, and some are one-time. More about volunteer opportunities.
