Volunteer to Build Exams and Assessments
ARRT committees and projects are supported by over 200 Registered Technologists who are volunteering with us in support of our mission to promote safe, high-quality patient care through credentialing, collaboration, and advocacy.
We are always seeking more volunteers from the profession to assist us in developing our exams and assessments. The purpose of the exam is to assess whether individuals have obtained the knowledge and cognitive skills underlying the intelligent performance of the tasks typically required in the discipline for practice at entry level.
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?
We are looking for individuals who are certified and registered in an ARRT discipline. As a volunteer, you'll need to hold the credential and be working (in the United States) in the discipline for which you'd like to volunteer. We are looking for a variety of roles that R.T.s play such as entry level technologists, therapists, and sonographers, R.T. administrators and managers, and seasoned R.T. staff. We also have specific roles for R.T.s involved in educating our next generation of professionals. Information for educators can be found here.
As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to your profession and gain direct experience in how ARRT serves the medical community. Volunteering is a valuable way to advance your professional development and add a distinguished activity to your resume.
Our committees may meet virtually or in-person at ARRT Headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota.
WAYS YOU CAN VOLUNTEER:
- As an Item Writer - You’ll complete training modules and then attend a virtual item writing workshop to learn how to create questions (or items) for our exams. As a bonus, you’ll receive payment for questions you submit as an item writer after the training. Item writer terms are for one year, but may be renewed. ARRT limits this opportunity to RTs who are not current educators.
- On an Examination Committee - As a committee member, you’ll attend virtual or in-person meetings to review newly created exam content. Terms are one year with the possibility to renew up to three times (total of four years) with one to two meetings per year. Meetings are usually one or two full days and may be virtual or in-person. ARRT provides committee members with an honorarium for attending committee meetings. ARRT limits this opportunity to RTs who are not current educators.
- On a Practice Analysis Advisory Committee - You’ll help create large-scale surveys designed to capture the tasks that Registered Technologists are performing around the country. You’ll also help analyze the results of the survey and make suggestions for our examination content specifications and clinical requirements. Terms are one year with the possibility to renew up to two times (total of three years) with one to two meetings per year. Meetings are usually one or two full days and may be virtual or in-person. ARRT provides committee members with an honorarium for attending committee meetings. ARRT welcomes educators to join us on our practice analysis committees.
- Special Projects Committees - These committees are short term, usually one-time event to accomplish specific and sometimes unique tasks. An example of such event is standard setting. This committee (which typically meets virtually) helps establish the cut score which is the number of correct answers needed to pass an exam. ARRT limits this opportunity to RTs who are not current educators. ARRT provides committee members with an honorarium for attending special project or standard setting committee meeting. From time to time, there may be other projects beyond standard setting. We welcome all interested RTs to volunteers for special projects that are not standard setting.
